Has your faithful four-legged friend become a dirty dog after a rough play, rolling through mud, swimming or other activities? Then cleaning your dog is a good idea. That, however, does not always have to mean that you have to put your dog in a bathtub. Sometimes, cleaning only the dirty spot with water and dog shampoo is enough. How often should you wash your dog? That is a question we regularly get at dog boutique The Pet Empire. In principle, your dog does not need to be washed very often. Your dog has a good protective layer on his skin, which ensures that dirt and other external influences can't do any harm. A good dog comb to brush the coat of your four-legged friend is often enough to keep your dog clean and shiny. Bathing a puppy is good for getting him used to this and socialising him at a young age.
How often do you bathe a dog?
On average, you only wash your dog twice or four times a year with a good dog shampoo. That is more than enough for most dogs. Regular combing is the basis of good coat care. Of course, it happens regularly that your dog gets dirty and you still think that bathing your dog is the only solution to get rid of the dirt and unpleasant odours. When you get started with that, absolutely use a special shampoo for dogs. Use certainly no ordinary shampoo, because shampoo for people contains too much acid for the dog skin and can cause irritation. Comb your dog before bathing him and take out all the supplies you need to care for him after bathing your dog. We also recommend using a good dog mat so that your dog doesn't slip on the slippery tile floor. Then wet your dog with lukewarm water and make sure that no water gets into his ears. Preferably use a shower head and spray from a few centimetres away. Many dogs visibly enjoy this! Then massage in the dog shampoo and work from back to front. Massage in the direction of hair growth. Have you completely soaped your dog? Then rinse the shampoo again with lukewarm water. Start now at the op of your dog and keep his head up. Then dry your wet dog with a soft dog towel.
