Avoid a cold dog with trendy warm dog clothes
At dog boutique The Pet Empire we regularly receive the question when we recommend the use of dog clothes. Because not only is it fun to let your dog wear the latest dog fashion, you also make sure your dog does not feel cold. Dog clothes are also called 'wear'. But when does a dog get cold? Can you see that and what should you do when your dog is feeling cold? It's good to know that especially with small dogs you have to ensure, that your dog is not too cold. This is because small dogs usually have short hair, in combination with a low amount of fat. On average a small dog already is freezing at temperatures at or below 8 ° C. Many people would not expect that and therefore, this is something to pay attention to. Medium-sized dogs can withstand cold weather just a bit better than smaller dogs. Still it is at temperatures around 5° C. that you should be careful, especially when the temperature is approaching freezing point. Large dogs usually only get cold at or below 3°C. Furthermore, much depends on the degree of activity. In any case it is always important to keep a good eye on whether your dog is cold and to do something about it in time with dog clothes, before you go outside together.
So you recognize a cold or hypothermic dog
Puppies and older dogs are also less able to withstand the cold. Old, but also sick dogs regulate their body temperature less. Puppies are also a vulnerable group. They are very small and therefore more susceptible to hypothermia. Strong wind and rain intensify the cold. How do you recognise a cold or hypothermic dog? A dog that is cold has a number of symptoms. Your dog:
- Is shivery
- Holds back in his normal behaviour and doesn't want to play anymore
- Has a weak heartbeat
- Breathes with more difficulty
This is what you do when your dog is too cold
Is your dog cold? Take immediate action and:
- Go to a warm environment
- Let your dog drink hot water
- Give your dog some sugar
- Wrap your dog in blankets
- Put a hypothermic puppy in a bath with warm water
- Always contact your veterinarian in case of severe hypothermia
So always keep an eye on your dog when it's cold outside.
